This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Harrison County Master Gardeners Garden Expo. The event is held each spring at the MSU Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi. Although the day was wet and dreary, a great turned out to learn about gardening! I gave a presentation entitled “Veggie Gardening 101” which was well-received by the crowd. I was asked by several in the audience to post my PowerPoint presentation, so here you go!

Are you interested in the new Farm Bill and how it affects you?
Mississippi State Extension Service and the Department of Agricultural Economics will be hosting workshops to learn more about the recently enacted 2014 Farm Bill. These workshops are for anyone who would like to attend, but the primary focus will be crop producers, lenders, and those impacted by farm programs and crop insurance. Along with the previously noted focus, on March 5 and 12, a session will be offered for specialty crop producers, and on Mar 12 a session will be offered for dairy industry participants. Please make anyone who you feel would benefit from these workshops aware of these dates/locations.

- Thursday March 13, 2014, 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., MSU Bost Theater, Mississippi State, MS
- Wednesday, March 19, 2014, 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., Carrollton Community House, Carrollton, MS
- Thursday, March 20, 2014: 9:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m., Lafayette County Extension Office, Oxford, MS
Please note that the workshops on March 5, 12, and 13 can be made available via interactive video for those counties that would like to participate. Finally, these will not be the only sessions that we conduct. Workshop dates and locations in south Mississippi are presently being discussed.
The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is of concern to all food producers. It is not yet well-understood among the masses, but as it comes closer to passage, we must share as much information about it as we have gathered. To do this, Dr. Barakat Mahmoud, Food Safety Specialist with Mississippi State University agreed to come and deliver a talk on FSMA. Understandably, there is some concern about the potential for some stipulations to be onerous to the producer. You can see Dr. Mahmoud’s presentation at the link below:
